Representation
Representation
The UQ Union has, as one of its core objectives, the representation of students within the University and its wider community. It is our responsibility to help ensure that the student voices are heard on issues that affect student life. This includes participating in UQ Boards and Committees and running student-centred campaigns at a university and community level. We are fortunate enough to be privy to much of the University decision making that occurs through our role on University committees and Boards.

This in itself provides an excellent opportunity to ensure the University is accountable to the needs of students. For example, the UQ Union has representation on the UQ Senate, which is the peak decision making body at UQ, the Academic Board, Senate Student Appeals, Building and Grounds Committee, Fees Reviewing Committee, Finance Committee, Traffic and Parking Policy Advisory Committee, Teaching and Learning Committee, Committee for Academic Programs Policy and a whole host of others. Whilst representing students generally, we also represent students more specifically under the following headings:

Student Rights

At the core of the representative function of the UQ Union is the representation of Student rights. With the responsibility overseen by one of the Union’s Vice-Presidents, the VP of Student Rights, great emphasis is placed on this responsibility.

To break it down more specifically, this function ensures students are represented in a variety of areas that affect their student life; welfare, education, employment and disabilities.
Students are represented through a number of means, office bearers actively participating on University committees, facilitating the development of policy on issues of particular concern to welfare, education, disability and employment sectors and developing campaigns based on the policy of the Union.

Gender and Sexuality

The UQ Union has a proud history representing women & LGBTI identifying students at UQ, as well as gender and sexuality issues more generally. The fact that we have a Vice-President of Gender and Sexuality highlights our commitment to these areas.

Whether it is increasing awareness of sexual health issues on campus or campaigning against gendered violence, the UQ Union represents all students on gender and sexuality issues.

International

International students represent a growing proportion of the UQ student population with over 6000 international students attending UQ last year. International students face unique challenges compared to domestic students and it is for this reason that it is essential that the UQ Union represents the unique interests of international students at UQ.

Post Grad

Postgraduate students can often be the forgotten student in university life. The UQ Union’s postgraduate officer ensures that this is not the case. As a prominent representative of the postgraduate community, the office-bearer attends many University committees to advocate the rights of postgraduate students and ensure the postgraduate voice is heard.
