Brisbane’s newest, hottest, summer festival is back…yes we
are talking about SUNSET SOUNDS.
With tickets to The Falls Festival selling out each year,
fans need not despair as the most sumptuous of the handpicked spices from
around the globe that are playing The Falls will frolic in the park at Sunset
Sounds.
Last year’s lineup was a killer. There were car doors on
stage (thanks to Ash Grunwald), Franz
Ferdinand pleaded with the audience to Take Them Out and the Kooks, they were
so Naïve.
This year’s lineup has impressed many, and yet again, boasts
a massive amount of local and international acts.
Karen O is guiding the formidable YEAH YEAH YEAH’s (USA) to
Australian shores for a much anticipated set of performances; iconic songwriter and producer, MOBY
(USA), is returning after 5+ years. Rewriting the hip hop rulebook will be the
HILLTOP HOODS; nerve-shatteringly beautiful and likely contender for Album Of
The Year, will be the GRIZZLY BEAR’s.
And yes the only way to see these artists is to slap on your
ray bans, singlet and summer gear and head to the Botanical Gardens on
January 6th -7th 2010.

Metronomy Review
It was the night before PARKLIFE and Metronomy, BMX and ELKE played at the Zoo.
The
first band to perform was a small local act all the way from the Gold
Coast: ELKE. These guys were a real crowd pleaser, especially when
they played there very popular BLUE DREAM LOVER song.
Then
came local-giants BMX. BMX are a four-piece indie group who are a cross
between Metronomy and friendly fires but are from Australia. During
their set the crowd was getting really energetic and were just etching
for the song WAR.
It was almost midnight and the entire
crowd of the Zoo came rushing towards the front stage. For those who
were going to Parklife the next day, they were ready for their first
shot of Metronomy - and boy was it a good first shot. Metronomy ran on
stage with brightly coloured light bulb's attached to there shirts and
broke out with a crowd favourite HEART RATE RAPID. The entire audience
knew the lyrics and all sang at the top of their voices. This continued
for the entire night.
During their set they introduced us to a
few of their new songs. These two new songs were warmly received by the
Zoo audience. Be sure to pick up Metronomy's second album when it comes
out to Australia soon.
The crowd favourites HEARTBREAKER and RADIO LADIO were again amazing, just like they were at EMPIRE back in
January. The Zoo's sound was really good, it wasn't packed out so it
made this Metronomy show more intimate.
They've come to Australia twice this year and I'm hoping for an even bigger headline tour next year.
The Frog Prince
The Frog Prince, developed by Lachlan Nyst in 2008 for the Belle Époque Restaurant and Bar in Fortitude Valley.
3 pieces of cucumber
A sliver of ginger
Mint leaves
30ml Hendricks Gin
30mls Cointreau
20ml vanilla sugar syrup
15ml lime juice
15ml lemon juice.
Muddle
the ginger and cucumber at the bottom of a boston glass. Leave the mint
until last, muddling mint with the stick gives the next drink you
prepare with it a toothpaste trace. Add all liquid ingredients and the
mint, releasing it’s flavor by placing it in one hand and clapping once
before including. Add ice, shake, and fine strain into a martini glass.
Garnish with two cucumber slices.
Cucumber is normally enough to
put most Brisbane dwellers off. Once I’ve convinced my customers to try
this drink however, it is always received well. It is a simple balance
of sweet, sour and strong with the roots, fruit and herbs giving it a
beautiful cooling finish, and the vanilla in the sugar neutralizing
most of the acidity. We frequently would recommend it at Belle as the
perfect pre-dinner cocktail.
